Aritmética, Libro IArithmetica, Book I

The 39 problems of the first book, with the general statement, the concrete values Diophantus chooses, the condition of possibility (diorismos) when he states one, the solution by his method, and the answer.

Diophantus always works with a single unknown, the arithmos (here x), and solves each problem with concrete numbers; the procedure holds in general. Book I is almost entirely determinate and linear: it is the training ground for the notation and the tricks he will use in the following books. The solutions reproduce step by step what Diophantus does, with his choice of unknown and his intermediate numbers, following Tannery’s Greek text (1893) and Heath’s translation (1910), which also fix the numbering. The equations column formulates each problem in the manner of the “Conspectus of problems” in Christianidis and Oaks (2023), solves it in modern notation, and lets you run the solution in SageMath (a sagecell.sagemath.org cell; needs a connection).

oculta las soluciones para intentar los problemas; muestra las ecuaciones para ver, junto a cada uno, su formulación moderna, su resolución algebraica y una celda de SageMath; con las ecuaciones a la vista, muestra la geometría para ver qué variedad define el problema (dimensión, género, parametrización, curva elíptica con su grupo de Mordell–Weil y enlace a la LMFDB) hide the solutions to try the problems yourself; show the equations to see, beside each one, its modern formulation, its algebraic solution and a SageMath cell; with the equations shown, show the geometry to see which variety the problem defines (dimension, genus, parametrization, elliptic curve with its Mordell–Weil group and LMFDB link)

Book I is preceded by the dedication to Dionysius, where Diophantus presents his notation: the arithmos, its powers up to the sixth, the minus sign and the rule of signs. Problems 5, 6, 14, 16–19, 21, 27, 28 and 30 carry an explicit condition in the Greek text. Solutions checked against the translation of Christianidis and Oaks (2023).
