The 35 problems of the second book. Here Diophantus proper begins: almost all the problems are indeterminate (they have infinitely many rational solutions) and the task is to find one. The devices that made the work famous appear: equating a quadratic expression to the square of “a multiple of x minus a number” chosen so that the x2 terms cancel (II.8, Fermat’s problem), the “double equation” (II.11–13) and the identities with sums and products (II.30–35).

As in Book I, the solutions reproduce step by step what Diophantus does, including the attempts he discards, following Tannery (1893) and Heath (1910). Problems 1–5 repeat problems of Book I and the text of 17–18 is doubtful; each case is noted. The equations column gives the modern formulation, in which these problems become rational points on conics and parametrizations, and lets you run the solution in SageMath.

oculta las soluciones para intentar los problemas; muestra las ecuaciones para ver, junto a cada uno, su formulación moderna, su resolución algebraica y una celda de SageMath; con las ecuaciones a la vista, muestra la geometría para ver qué variedad define el problema (dimensión, género, parametrización, curva elíptica con su grupo de Mordell–Weil y enlace a la LMFDB) hide the solutions to try the problems yourself; show the equations to see, beside each one, its modern formulation, its algebraic solution and a SageMath cell; with the equations shown, show the geometry to see which variety the problem defines (dimension, genus, parametrization, elliptic curve with its Mordell–Weil group and LMFDB link)

Numbering of Tannery and Heath. Problems 6, 7 and 8 carry an explicit condition or remark in the text; in the margin of II.8 Fermat wrote the note that became his Last Theorem. Solutions checked against the translation of Christianidis and Oaks (2023).
