The 30 problems of the fifth Greek book, the hardest of the work. Diophantus twice cites his lost Porisms (V.3, V.5), uses three right triangles of the same area (V.7–8), and introduces the method of approximation (parisotes) to divide a number into two or three nearly equal squares (V.9–14), with the most famous arithmetical conditions of the work: which numbers are sums of two or of three squares. It ends with the only everyday problem, the wine problem (V.30).
Between V.19 and V.20 the manuscripts have a lacuna: the solution of V.19 and, according to Tannery and Heath, three more problems are lost. The solutions reproduce step by step what Diophantus does, with his discarded attempts and auxiliary problems, following Tannery (1893) and Heath (1910); the equations column gives the modern formulation, and every SageMath cell returns Diophantus’s answers.
oculta las soluciones para intentar los problemas; muestra las ecuaciones para ver, junto a cada uno, su formulación moderna, su resolución algebraica y una celda de SageMath; con las ecuaciones a la vista, muestra la geometría para ver qué variedad define el problema (dimensión, género, parametrización, curva elíptica con su grupo de Mordell–Weil y enlace a la LMFDB)hide the solutions to try the problems yourself; show the equations to see, beside each one, its modern formulation, its algebraic solution and a SageMath cell; with the equations shown, show the geometry to see which variety the problem defines (dimension, genus, parametrization, elliptic curve with its Mordell–Weil group and LMFDB link)
