The 44 problems of the fourth book, preserved only in the Arabic translation by Qusṭā ibn Lūqā (ninth century) discovered in 1968 in Mashhad. In the original order it comes after the Greek Book III. Its subject is squares, cubes and higher powers: in the Arabic terminology the unknown is the “thing” (x), its square the māl (x2), its cube the “cube” (x3), and the higher powers are named by composition (māl māl = x4, cube cube = x6, up to cube cube māl = x8 and cube cube cube = x9). The Arabic text is much more verbose than the Greek: every solution is followed by a full numerical verification.
The solutions reproduce Diophantus’s assignments, the equation he forms and the result, following the translation and commentary of Christianidis and Oaks (2023), who follow Sesiano’s edition (1982); the steps and numbers are those of the text, written here in our own words. Double solutions and those Sesiano regards as interpolated are noted. The numbering is Sesiano’s.
